Synopsis
Young lovers Ruth and Jimmy decide to get married after Ruth unexpectedly becomes pregnant. As they prepare the flat they plan to move into, the international situation worsens until their world is brought to a violent and horrific end by nuclear war. The effects of a nuclear holocaust on the working class population of Sheffield are portrayed with grim and uncompromising realism, as Ruth survives and gives birth to her daughter in the post-nuclear-war hell that is all that remains of human society.
Notes
- Written by Barry Hines (1939-2016), the author of "A Kestrel for a Knave" (1968), which was adapted for the film Kes (1969)
- Widely regarded as both a landmark masterpiece of British cinema and the most realistic depiction of the consequences of nuclear war ever committed to film, it is fair to say that this movie has a lasting emotional impact on all who view it and is perhaps not recommended for those of a nervous disposition or who are prone to depression.

I actually watched this when it was originally transmitted in 1984. Since then, I've watched it two more times, and each time I've needed a couple of days simply to recover my equilibrium after viewing it - that's how good it is.
My Movie Rating: 10 / 10
