Synopsis

High up in an alpine valley live two men - the good herbalist Kosobrin, and the evil hunter Bedanec. Bedanec has a captive servant girl by the name of Mojca who, one day, meets Kosobrin and confides in him how difficult her life is, causing the old man to give her refuge. Bedanec then captures the brave and fearless shepherd boy Kekec, and offers to release him if he will help him recapture Mojca. Naturally, Kekec (being brave and fearless) refuses, and is taken captive himself. Meanwhile, Kekec's family and friends - including his best friend Ro?le - have come to believe that Kekec must have had an accident in the mountains and died. Will Kekec ever see his village again?...

Notes

• Based on the 1924 novel "Kekec Above the Lonely Abyss" (Kekec nad samotnim breznom), which was the third of a trilogy of novels about Kekec by the Slovene writer and poet Josip Vandot (1884-1944)
• This film was the first of a trilogy of films about Kekec directed by Jo?e Gale, succeeded by Srecno, Kekec! (1963) and Kekceve ukane (1968).
• This film was the first ever Slovenian film to win an award at an international festival, receiving the Golden Lion award for Best Film for Youth aged between 11 and 14, at the 13th Venice International Film Festival in 1952.
