There Will Be Blood
(2007)

Country: USA

Genre: Drama

IMDb

Synopsis

When silver-miner-turned-oilman Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day-Lewis in a much-praised and multiple award-winning performance) learns about oil oozing from the ground near the Western town of Little Boston in California, he travels there with his son H.W. (Dillon Freasier). Using H.W. to project the image of a caring family man, Plainview gains the co-operation of almost all the locals in the town to his oil-drilling project. However, Plainview's gradual accumulation of wealth and power causes his true self to surface, alienating everyone around him, including his son.

Notes

  • Released to widespread critical acclaim, this movie has been the recipient of numerous awards.
  • The film was inspired by the 1926-27 novel "Oil!" by Upton Sinclair (1878-1968), but the story is too different to be considered an adaptation.
  • Screencaps from this movie are available in the Gallery of Dillon Freasier's Profile page in this database.

I love this film. Daniel Plainview is a spiritual void, but of course he'll never realise that himself. Some have criticised the finale, but I rather like it - there had to be a final confrontation between Eli and Daniel - the former a little desperate, the latter completely unhinged - and naturally the more insane character ends up on top! Dillon Freasier is just wonderful - he's been rightly described as a "quiet, magnetic, intelligent presence" in the film - a boy one can't help but love and want to protect. To give this film anything less than 10 stars would seem churlish and quibbling.
