El mar

AKA: The Sea

Country: Spain

Genre: Drama

Two boys living through the Spanish Civil War, Ramallo (Nilo Mur) and Manuel (David Lozano), and a girl, Francisca, are witness to a terrible series of events. When the father of their friend Pau is executed, Pau decides to take revenge by torturing Juli?, the son of his father's killer; but things go horribly wrong, and Pau ends up brutally murdering him. Unable to cope with what he has done, he then commits suicide. As adults, Ramallo and Manuel meet in a tuberculosis sanatorium where Francisca, now a nun, nurses the sick. Ramallo has become a thief, whereas Manuel is obsessed with religion. Each in different ways is haunted by the past, and only the sea provides any sense of final solace or peace. A characteristically cheery little number from the great Agust? Villaronga.
