A Slight Case of Murder
(1938)
Country: USA
Synopsis
With the end of Prohibition, bootlegger Remy Marco (Edward G. Robinson in a spoof of his own gangster image) decides to become a legitimate brewer. To show that he's now a public benefactor, he visits the local orphanage and takes home an orphan boy (14-year-old Bobby Jordan). Despite such displays of virtue, however, he slowly goes broke because the beer he manufactures tastes terrible - but everyone is afraid to tell him so! With banks preparing to foreclose on his brewery, he retreats to his Saratoga summer home, only to find the bodies of four dead mobsters (who meant to ambush him, but were killed by a confederate whom they meant to betray). When his daughter comes home with a fianc? who turns out to be a state cop, he begins to worry about the four hard-to-explain corpses in his home!
