Synopsis

Screenwriter Dennis Potter weaves together three worlds - a contemporary hospital, a noir thriller, and the wartime England of Potter's own boyhood. Hospitalised and tormented by a terrible skin disease, former writer of detective fiction Philip Marlow (Michael Gambon) rewrites in his head one of his old novels, "The Singing Detective", whilst recalling events in his boyhood which left a lasting psychological legacy of guilt and disgust.

Notes

This miniseries was ranked 20th on the British Film Institute's list of the 100 Greatest British Television Programmes, as voted by industry professionals in 2000.
