Synopsis
When the President of the United States nominates Robert A. Leffingwell (Henry Fonda) as Secretary of State, the Senate, in accordance with its constitutional requirement to tender its 'advice and consent' on such nominations, appoints a committee to investigate Leffingwell, one which exposes a secret from his past that he feels the need to explain to his devoted son Johnny (Eddie Hodges). When, despite the revelations about Leffingwell, the Chairman of the committee is blackmailed to issue a favourable verdict or risk exposure of a past homosexual affair, he takes a drastic step which will have serious repercussions for everyone involved.
