Synopsis
An orphaned Polish refugee - whose real name is Janek, but whom everyone calls Johnny - is unloved by his Edinburgh foster mother Mrs. MacGregor, who only puts him up because of the financial benefits she receives from the state in return. The young boy dreams of returning to Poland, and eventually runs away. But he has the misfortune to fall in with a couple of jewel thieves, and is unwittingly implicated in a robbery. On the run again, Jan's journey takes him across the Scottish Highlands, where he encounters a utopian children's village populated by orphans like himself. But by this time the police are hot on his trail...
