Synopsis
The story of the last year and a half of the lives of Tsar Nicholas II and his family, from the February Revolution of 1917 to their execution by the Bolsheviks in July 1918.
Notes
- The Russian title means literally 'The Romanovs: a Crowned Family' - and as well as the imperial crown the title is meant to suggest the crown of thorns associated with martyrs. In August 2000, Nicholas II, his wife, the four daughters and little Alexei were canonized as 'passion bearers' (those who share in Christ's Passion through the manner of their death) by the Russian Orthodox Church. Footage of part of the actual ceremony of their canonization is shown in the final scene of the movie.
