Sorrell and Son
(1984)

TV Mini-Series

Country: UK

Genre: Drama

IMDb

Synopsis

After his wife walks out on him, Captain Sorrell, officer and gentleman, has only a single aim in life: to do everything he can to secure the future of his young son, Kit. To this end, he is forced to take a menial job as a porter in the disreputable Angel Inn in Staunton. The devotion of father to son is passionately reciprocated by the boy, and as Kit grows into manhood and faces both triumph and despair, the vision of his father's love is always before him.

Notes

  • Based on the 1925 novel of the same name by Warwick Deeping, this miniseries is considered a very faithful adaptation by devotees of the book.
  • This is the only television adaptation of the novel to date. There have, however, been two adaptations for the cinema: one in 1927, with H.B. Warner as Stephen Sorrell and Mickey McBan as young Kit; and another in 1933, with H.B. Warner again in the role of Stephen Sorrell and with Peter Penrose as young Kit.
  • Paul Critchley appears as Young Kit Sorrell in the first two parts of this six-part miniseries.

Dividing Bar

An interesting series though the adult characters tend to be either very nice or very bad and not much in between. Paul Critchley is quite good as the boy, Kit. Warwick Deeping (what a marvellous name) churned out his books roughly one a year, similar to A J Cronin.

Dividing Bar

Handsome and involving slow sentimental epic from the pre-Internet days when attention spans were longer! Paul Critchley, who plays Kit Sorrell at thirteen, appears only in the first two episodes and his portrayal is mostly on one note of wide-eyed earnestness, but that's not his fault, it's baked into the material. Warwick Deeping was a doctor and writer, a best-seller in his day who earned several scathing mentions in Orwell's essays. The book on which this is based draws on his medical experience and deals with the then-hot controversial topic of euthanasia.
