According to Cassavetes, this is not really a Cassavetes film. It's probably more effective cinema for that: in my humble opinion the only really good Cassavetes film is his first, the rough-edged and vivid Shadows; after that he dove down the 'people waving their arms around and shouting' rabbithole. Most of the children here actually have the disabilities in question: they were from the Pacific State Hospital in Pomona, California. In some scenes the film could be seen as a close antecedent of Warrendale, Allan King's 1967 vérité documentary about a Toronto facility for emotionally disturbed children. The downside is that the tug-of-war between Cassavetes and Stanley Kramer makes it swing back and forth between quasi-documentary and didactic Hollywoodish melodrama. Modern viewers are likely to be shocked, even disoriented, by the viewpoints expressed: the progressive thing to do, apparently, is to institutionalise disabled children, whereas keeping them at home with their families prevents them from reaching their potential!

pretty good. Bruce Ritchie is a heart-stealer.

Cassavetes directed, but thank heaven someone kicked him out of the editing room.
