A very interesting friendship tale but with a problem. One is a Catholic and the other is a Jew. How these little kids were able to solve this problem has turned this movie into a gem. Great acting by both of them.
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10For some reason the priest-rabbi dialogue in this made me think of the 1961 masterpiece Mother Joan of the Angels, with its stunning scene in which a Polish rabbi and Roman Catholic priest, played by the same actor, confront one another. I was also reminded of John Schlesinger's extremely beautiful depictions of an Orthodox or Conservative/Masorti Jewish service and a Russian Orthodox Christian one in Sunday, Bloody Sunday and An Englishman Abroad, respectively. This film is very well made and manages to be sweet without being schlocky, but can't avoid seeming a bit pat and contrived. A better film in the 'children make friends across a social divide in England' vein is Jemima + Johnny: it's short and to the point, the children are that crucial bit younger that makes their unprejudiced innocence more believable, and it's made Free Cinema style and is often reminiscent of Lindsay Anderson's wonderful early shorts such as The White Bus and O Dreamland.
