Emmanuelle Bercot's filmmaking career has been uniquely interesting, but patchy: Clément is a wonderful and important piece of cinema but her graduation film, La Puce, isn't a patch on Catherine Breillat's 36 Fillette and her later film Backstage is also quite flawed. However, Bercot managed to reinvent herself and achieve considerable commercial success with this well-made movie. The Catherine-Deneuve-on-a-road-trip conceit is less than engaging at first, but in the developing closeness between her character and the grandson, who's very well played by Nemo Schiffman, we recognise Clément's clear-eyed, fresh approach to such dynamics. The grandson's mercurial charms are also reminiscent of those of the title character in Clément.
