Synopsis
Karl Childers, now a grown man, is released from a psychiatric hospital where he has been hospitalized since the age of 12 for the murder of his mother and her lover. He returns to his childhood town and although being mentally challenged, gets a job fixing small motors at a local repair shop. He befriends a young boy, Frank, and is soon invited by Frank's mother, Linda, to move into the family's garage. A strong relationship develops between Karl and Frank and a confrontation builds with Linda's abusive boyfriend Doyle.

My Movie Rating:
10 / 10 With his Southern drawl, Lucas Black is spot on in his role as young Frank. He gives able support to Billy Bob Thornton as the simple minded Carl. The DVD extras reveal that Thornton had all the parts filled for his film except a 10 year old kid. He cast Lucas after seeing a video his mother made of her son in their backyard. A great film showing compassion, an unlikely friendship and ultimate tragedy.
My Movie Rating: 8 / 10 Billy Bob said in an Episode of Inside The Actors Studio on A&E network, that he knew a mentally challenged man in his early years, he paterned the Carl character, in voice and Demeanor, after this person! I thought Yokem did well as the closed minded redneck, and of course, Lucas was outstanding! his southern accent is genuine, he was born raised in the deep south.
