8 / 10 The importance of the Pippi Longstocking books, first published shortly after the Second World War, is difficult to overstate. In particular, they did a great deal to increase respect for both children and women as strong, autonomous people. Their anarchic, subversive humour makes them a huge hit with most kids and many adults. The 1969 TV series, scripted by Astrid Lindgren herself and made up of thirteen half-hour episodes, is surely the definitive screen Pippi. This film is a spinoff of the series, but it's a fine piece of cinema in its own right and has now been beloved by several generations of children.
