I'm in two minds about this one. It's definitely a must-watch. Looked at in isolation, it's moving and emotionally truthful. However, if you've read the play this is based on and the book (Les Garçons/The Boys) written as a fleshing-out of the play -- the story is based on Henri de Montherlant's own adolescence -- it becomes a bit baffling. Though the story is quite similar to Peyrefitte's Les Amitiés particulières, the tone is very different: Peyrefitte was savagely anti-clerical, whereas Montherlant described himself as an atheist with an emotional attraction to Christianity. At the centre of his story is the figure of the conflicted atheist priest, and this doesn't really come across well in the movie. The boys' ages have been changed from fourteen and sixteen in the book to about eleven and fourteen or fifteen in the movie, and that alters their dynamic a bit. Also, in his commentary on the special edition DVD, the director and co-star Christophe Malavoy seems oddly reluctant to admit to the romantic and physical aspects of the boys' relationship, which Montherlant makes quite plain. The older boy decides to sublimate his feelings into a nobler mentoring relationship, Plato-style, and from this come lines such as "I love you, but I'm not in love with you", which in the film just don't make sense, as the boys clearly are in love and we aren't filled in on the background.
