Born William Charles Jones, in Wheeling, West Virginia, John Holmstrom wrote of him that "The flaming hair which provided his cognomen streamed wildly back from a square, freckled face dominated by defiant blue eyes." ("The Moving Picture Boy", p. 58) Red's acting won the praise of Charlie Chaplin after he performed in Chaplin's "The Circus".
