Notes
- Igor Smirnov is best remembered for his role as the indomitably sunny, bedridden crippled lad in "Detstvo Gorkogo" ("The Childhood of Maxim Gorky", 1938). Director Mark Donskoy was later to recall that they had some difficulty working with him: "On the whole, when working with child-actors, there is a danger of rehearsing them too much. That was the situation with another gifted child-actor, Igor Smirnov, who played the role of Lenka. Igor himself aspired to 'act', and on top of that his mother interfered and began to rehearse with him at home. As a result of this 'preparation', the boy came to the set so 'trained' that he overacted in front of the camera. All the immediacy and freshness of performance had completely disappeared. We had to 'break' Igor; we had to work hard to bring him back to childish immediacy." Given how natural Smirnov's performance is in the final cut of the film, it is fair to say that Donskoy was completely successful!
