Biography
Miguel Chavez was 12 years old when he starred in Joseph Krumgold's documentary, so he must have been born around 1940. After "And Now, Miguel" was completed, Krumgold encouraged Chavez to move to New York and take acting lessons. However, Chavez's father would not allow it. Instead, Chavez spent 30 years in the hand-crafted furniture business (becoming a skilled woodcarving artist) and raised a family with his wife Frances. Later on, in semi-retirement, he ran a small vacation rental business in New Mexico. In a 2008 interview, Chavez revealed that he had no regrets about not becoming a professional actor: "I've lived the way I wanted to live, and I wouldn't change my life...for millions and millions of dollars." Reflecting on the impact the movie had on his life, he described how "Even today when I walk into a grocery store, someone yells out, 'Hey, it's now Miguel!' I swear one of these days I'm going to die and they're going to write on my tombstone, 'And Now Miguel Passed Away.'...Because of the film and the book, I still get letters and calls from people all over the world."
