Biography
Born Richard Daniels Jr., 'Mickey', as he became known, was signed up by Hal Roach for his 'Our Gang' series of short films. He began on a salary of $37.50 a week, but two years later this had risen to $175. On a couple of occasions he acted alongside Harold Lloyd, such as in the feature "Dr. Jack" (1922), where Harold Lloyd is the doctor whose task it is to administer some disagreeable medicine to the boy. Mickey outgrew Our Gang in 1926, but continued in films until 1941, occasionally even returning to Our Gang shorts in adult roles - most notably in "Reunion in Rhythm" (1937), where four Our Gang alumni toast their successors of the next generation (Mickey's counterpart is, of course, Alfalfa). With his wonderfully expressive face, and his perfect comic acting, Mickey Daniels was one of the true Greats of comedy during the Silent era. After the war, he faded into obscurity, becoming first a construction engineer, and then later on a taxi driver.
