IMDb

Biography

Gordon Griffith has the honour of being the silver screen's first Tarzan, appearing as Tarzan as a Boy in the first part of the very first Tarzan movie, "Tarzan of the Apes" (1918), before Elmo Lincoln takes over as the adult Tarzan for the remainder of the film. Gordon's performance caused one critic of the time to enthuse: "He is a fit subject for a sculptor, as he climbs through the trees in the company of the apes, his naked body showing its grace of line in every move." After a stint in the absurd (but inadvertently hilarious) anti-masturbation feature "The Solitary Sin" (1919), in which it is suggested that masturbation leads to insanity, Griffith starred as an energetic and memorable Tom Sawyer in "Huckleberry Finn" (1920), alongside Lewis Sargent's Huck. In later life he went on to be an assistant director, as well as producing several films of his own.
