Benji, Zax and the Alien Prince (1983)

Benji, Zax, and the Alien Prince stars Christopher Burton as Crown Prince Yubi from the distant, red planet of Antars. After his father is killed and his mother (possibly the sovereign) is imprisoned by warlord tyrant, Zanu, "young" Prince Yubi (his age is never specified, but he may be as many as eighty Antarian years old) and his level two asynchronous droid guardian, Zax, flee Antars and begin their exile on a "primitive planet called Earth".

But as the only hope for Zanu's eventual defeat, Zanu (who is only seen in the only credits and played by special effect artist, Ken Miller) is not content to allow his rival quiet exile on Earth. He sends several hunters to capture the prince. His primary hunters are Darah (played by Angie Bolling, then Anna Hollbrook) and Khyber (played by Joe Rainer, then Dallas Miles) whom he discovers are easily thwarted by the well-educated prince and by the strong team work of the prince, Zax, and the prince's canine friend, Benji.

In response, Zax sends other, more deadly hunters such as Harwell Thompson (UFO) and Tanya (whose sensual tricks ensnare the prince most effectively in "Puppy Love").

But life is not all running from Zanu's hunters! Simple survival on Earth proves to be a major challenge for the prince as he is taken for a mere boy of eight or nine years old--and too young to work for the money he needs to provide food and shelter for himself.

In addition, he is constant challenged by Earthling misunderstanding of his life support device, his cipher, which adapts the earth atmosphere to something he can breathe, and is worn on his left wrist at all times. Unfortunately for the prince, Antarian ciphers look like large rubies set in precious metals (his is gold; the other Antarians wear silver ciphers) and his life is endangered by more than one human making this mistake.

Benji, Zax, and the Alien Prince is a series with a rich back story that is very slowly revealed across the series. Christopher Burton provides expert performances in each episode, despite his young age at the time of filming (he is only 7 years old at the time this was made). The episode "Good-bye Earth" is absolutely one to watch, for both its value to series canon and for Christopher's performances. Where else will you see any actor weep in not one but two scenes in a single 21 minute episode of television?

it takes skill on the actor's part to pull of these scenes and Christopher Burton delivers! "Good-bye Earth" is where you really come to care most deeply for the prince as a person, not simply as a protagonist in a series. Here, he becomes REAL.

Christopher Burton has a rare gift for acting. This series is one wonderful place to see it!
