Men of Boys Town (1941)

Unrestrained nonstop sentiment; too syrupy even for me. But it is worth it to see little Darryl Hickman in the 2nd half. Incredibly cute.

(also interesting to see that in 1941 an actor could tell a boy that he has beautiful eyes.)

Mickey Matson and the Copperhead Conspiracy (2012)

It is a kid's movie but I thought the elements were handled pretty well - much better than I expected.

The Odd Life of Timothy Green (2012)

(revised, after watching again after several weeks)

C J Adams will steal your heart all the way through, and I thought I would be totally blown away by this movie, but sadly:

The first 25 minutes are wonderful and the rest of the movie is almost insulting, a wet firecracker. Instead of story development we see in the middle part a series of 'big moments' which either fall flat or go sour. It is as if they didn't really know what to do about 'story' and just filled in the spaces with lame crap.

Okay, the ending was nice too.

Riri Shushu no subete (2001)

Predictable rating from this old guy. This is a movie for younger, serious film buffs. For me, the movie as a whole makes a very strong argument against kids having access to internet chat rooms. And if I want to watch jerky, amateur camera action I will go to Youtube.

Spy Hard (1996)

There's way too little of Mason Gamble. I like this type of spoof, but this material gets thin too fast. Leslie Nielson has done much better. (and who would have thought that the stolid and handsome star of 'Forbidden Planet' would wind up his movie career as a great clown?)

Taming Andrew (2000)

One of the most moving performances by a boy actor I have seen. It is a shame that the movie as a whole could not measure up.
