Dividing Bar

Alexander (2004)

What a disaster. Oliver Stone has outdone himself again and turned the story of Alexander the Great into a tiresome two-hour long soap opera which looks like a gay porno. Colin Farrell's acting is so bad that you forget to ask why the Macedonians all talk with Scottish accents. Alexander's 'inspiring' speech to his men near the end of the film is the only high point. Farrell's overacting in this scene will make you laugh all your frustrations away!

Almost Angels (1962)

Pretty children singing pretty songs amidst the pretty Austrian countryside. Rather like the Sound of Music. All right if you want to relax and don't feel like dealing with too much of a plot.

Les amitiés particulières (1964)

The tension in this film puts to shame most of today's Romantic dramas, without relying on gimmicks or crudeness of any kind. Didier Haudepin remains one of the most seductive child actors in film history.

Hope and Glory (1987)

Sebastian Rice-Edwards is one of the best-looking child actors in British cinema without a doubt.

Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang (2010)

Asa Butterfield is the only highlight in this rather unremarkable and unnecessary sequel.

Oliver! (1968)

Very enjoyable and, at times, moving. Ron Moody really steals the spotlight as Fagin, and manages to make the character of a child-exploiting thief sympathetic. Jack Wild is charming and Mark Lester is darling, although some of the musical numbers seem a bit excessive.

This is England (2006)

Unfortunately, like most movies dealing with these sorts of issues, the film never really bothers to explore the actual problems and tensions underlying nationalism and nativism, but just sort of expects you to reject them out of hand like the protagonist.

Time Bandits (1981)

Not a bad idea, but Terry Gilliam doesn't make it come to life. His only good work was with the Pythons.

Toast (2010)

Although it appears that Nigel Slater injustly slandered his step-mother in real life, the movie stands on its own as a charming story of growing up in 1960s England, full of human warmth and loneliness subtly conveyed by the entire cast.
