A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001)

I liked this movie a lot. Intriguing, unusual plot. The last 1/3 of the film is really haunting, but nicely done, I thought.

Some have speculated that had Kubrick finished the film (instead of Spielberg) that it would have been better. For me, the film was just right as it was -- had Kubrick finished it, it would have been too dark for me, I fear.

Almost Famous (2000)

Fun movie, unusual. I liked it.

Apollo 13 (1995)

Excellent suspense film -- the wonder of it is that everyone who sees this movie knows the outcome in advance (it was a historical event), and yet the suspense and drama is still there. I recall the emotion of the scene where the family is waiting helplessly during the blackout period in which there is no communication with the space capsule as it returns to Earth.

Babel (2006)

Excellent, very well-made film. In my opinion, it should have won the Oscar for best film (rather than The Departed.)

Intriguing idea, following a single event and viewing the ramifications from several angles. One wonders how many chains of events like this happen every day. Caveat: There were some significant downer elements in the film and as I've stated elsewhere, I don't handle such things very well any more!

The Beastmaster (1982)

Good visuals. Otherwise, the movie is only interesting because it's so different. [And of course, silly me, I like Marc Singer in the movie]

The Blue Lagoon (1980)

Good for visuals only, and maybe the fantasy of an idyllic situation. But the visuals were nice.

Cahill U.S. Marshal (1973)

This was a pretty good movie for me. The viewer empathises with the kids -- and keeps pulling for them to make it through the dilemma all right.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005)

Interesting film -- although I was a little skeptical when I heard (in advance) that it had Christian imagery in it, it seemed to work okay in the story, just kind of an inspirational, "good triumphs over evil" type message. I'm not entirely sure if I would take a kid to see it -- maybe with a little explanatory talk afterward, it would be okay.

Otherwise, a nice fantasy story.

The Cider House Rules (1999)

This is one of the best movies I've ever seen. The story had a nice symmetry to it -- starting the story in an orphanage and ending the story there. Hot-button issues like abortion are dealt with in a frank manner, while weaving in a fine coming-of-age story.

Thematically, I loved the point made by the filmmaker (based on the book) that humans sometimes must ignore "the rules" and find the right way to go. Excellent point and excellent film!

CrissCross (1992)

Very nice visuals and some nostalgia elements (for the late 60s time period) -- however, not much of a movie otherwise, for me.

E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

A classic, very enjoyable and heart-warming. I don't have a burning desire to see it again, however.

Empire of the Sun (1987)

Well done movie with substantive subject matter. I loved the music in it. This was the breakout film for Christian Bale.

The only caveat for me (and people like me) is that the older I get, the less I am able to absorb movies with heavier subject matter. I'm just getting weak!

Frequency (2000)

Clever, mind-bending movie. I liked it. It also had heart-warming elements.

Gladiator (2000)

This is one of those movies (for me) that was well done, but I honestly did not like it because it was so dark.

Home Alone (1990)

Classic movie, heart-warming and very humorous. Macaulay Culkin is cute as a button in this movie. It probably wouldn't have worked as well with any other actor in that part.

Jaws (1975)

Okay as such movies go. I just remember watching this in a theatre as a kid, and jumping in my seat at various scenes.

Lost In Space (1998)

Nothing much to recommend this movie, for me. It was not very faithful to the original and the story rambled, in my view. There were elements of the plot that might have worked in a different sci-fi movie with different characters and setting, if those plot elements were developed better.

Mysterious Skin (2004)

Very well done, clever and interesting. The movie had a mystery aspect to it and explored some strong themes.

For me, it's one of those films that, while it was well done (and realistic, no doubt) it was just a little too much of a downer for me, overall. I would not recommend seeing it unless the viewer has a strong stomach.

The NeverEnding Story (1984)

I love this movie. It has sad / moody parts to it, but the scenes and characters are so vivid and memorable, it's impossible to pull away from the movie while watching. The ending is very fun and uplifting.

Parenthood (1989)

Good comedy (Steve Martin) with some dramatic elements and warm-feeling moments. [A disclaimer: One of the reasons I like the movie is because of Keanu Reeves!]
