Over the Top (1987)

Over the Top was one of those movies I kind of enjoyed many years ago. The story is very simple again, as in most of Sly's movies. David Mendenhall delivers a good performance, I actually liked his character. The ultimate showdown is perfectly staged, you have to acknowledge that. Thus the dramatic aspect as well as the emotional burden lift the movie's quality to a certain extent and make it a solid 7 for me. There are definitely better father-son stories, but I think that this one lived up to its demand.

Overboard (1987)

An absolutely hilarious story that is entirely unrealistic. However, it has some positive and funny scenes you should watch out for. I personally didn't get bored; although it lacks a real sophisticated element, it is enjoyable. Give it a try.

Paradise (1991)

Wonderful! Just saw this one recently. How come I have missed it for so long? Elijah is great, as is Thora Birch. The cast is wonderful, the story is emotionally exposing and moving. Best character performances by all protagonists. Wonderful and awesome story, great setting.

Parenthood (1989)

Not my kind of movie. Slow, corny and badly acted.

The Patriot (2000)

The boys are perfectly cast. The sequence right at the beginning when Mel Gibson is chasing the soldiers after the cruel murder of his son is well-handled by the two boys (Trevor Morgan, Bryan Chafin). The story as a whole is typical American cinema, filled with pathos and patriotism.

Pauls Reise (1999)

Great that this movie is presented here. It is among my all-time favorites. The strongest and most appealing theme is the bond between father and son. Niccolo Matteo Casagrande is outstanding in here. He plays young Paul, a boy who yearns for appreciation and love by his father. The movie is presented as a road movie. Paul's dad is a trucker, so the boy runs away from home and hides in his truck to be with him on his next tour. The problem is that Paul had leukaemia many years ago, and his latest health check indicates that he has a backfall. He doesn't know that, neither does his dad. On their tour they discover a real bond of affection. It is heartbreaking how Paul tries to hide the signs of his illness, as this would mean having to leave his dad. The emotional climax comes when his dad realises the symptoms. Back then when Paul was ill for the first time he hadn't been able to see his son suffer, so he never went to the hospital, which Paul interpreted as missing love. Now, grown in courage and aware of his mistakes, Paul's dad stays with him.

It's the story of a broken man who rediscovers his faith and the story of a boy whose infinite love for his dad helps him to survive and to overcome his illness. Wonderful acting, great road movie.

Pay It Forward (2000)

This movie is great. Yeah, I mean, it has an outstanding cast (Caviezel, Haley, Spacey, Hunt) and a message. A real, pure, inspirational message. A message that makes you think. A message that shows you what is possible. A message that reveals how one idea, one individual concept can evolve into a string of events that eventually changes deadlocked conventions and opens our hearts to love and benevolence. Haley acts, as always, as genuine and as mature as we know it from him.

Pelle erobreren (1987)

Great performance by Pelle Hvenegaard. If it was just him, the story would be an all-time classic. The storyline itself though is a bit weird and sometimes bizarre. Pelle's performance makes the movie special though, he shines amidst the bleak northern countryside. His dreams and his aspirations are inspiring. He is a very handsome young lad, as far as I can judge.

A Perfect World (1993)

I copied my comment from imdb.com from 2003. Sorry for my style back then.

"A Perfect World", with Kevin Costner and Clint Eastwood tells the story of the fugitive convict Butch Haynes, who escapes with his partner Terry Pugh from the Huntsville prison in 1963. On their flight, they kidnap the young 8-year-old-boy Phillip Perry, and continue their race across Texas. When Pugh tries to abuse Phillip, Butch kills him. While Texas Ranger Chief Red Garnett (Eastwood) hunts them, the two discover similar bonds, and Butch really comes to like young Phillip. The boy himself overcomes his suspicion and accepts Butch as a kind of "older brother", or even stronger, as the compensation for his father, who he never knew. As the hunt continues, Butch tells Phillip about his life and his wish to find his own father in Alaska, where he would like to live in peace and dignity. They make certain stops, steal three different cars, and survive confrontations with the local cops. The movie deals not only with this flight of a criminal but also strongly with the issues of fathers and sons. That's what puts this movie above the usual road movie. It goes deep, deals with exhaustion, love, hopelessness and pure human emotions. The climax of the movie is unexpected; the dramatic ending is impressive. Eastwood made a perfect job both as actor and director, and T.J. Lowther's performance as young Phillip is simply great and convincing. One of Costner's best as well, a road movie with funny dialogues, a thrilling background story, moving emotions, brilliant acting performances, some brutal and unexpected scenes, a great setting in Texas around 1963, and an indeed amazing climax at the end, which makes the movie a dramatic masterpiece.

Peter Pan (2003)

This one is a "must watch", that's for sure. Jeremy Sumpter is an outstanding Peter Pan. The whole story is wonderfully adapted. I particularly liked the scene when he stumbled to his knees and cried that he believed in fairies, that's so strong! The other boys are brilliant as well. Harry Eden is good in here too.

The Power Of One (1992)

I remember this one. It didn't leave that much of a lasting impression on me. The choir scene is to be watched out for indeed. The message is fine and clear-cut, mixed with a strong coming of age process and many very honest approaches to racial equality and dignity.
