Angela's Ashes (1999)

A great movie that needs to be recommended. It is the story of the childhood hardships of Frank McCourt, based on his book. It is the story of Ireland and how living and growing up in Ireland influenced and affected the ordinary and poor families in the 1930s, a desperate and bleak time. Life in Limerick was a burden for anyone and nothing but an uncompassionate struggle for the very day-to-day existence. This story symbolizes the epitome of James Joyce's perception of Ireland as a society caught in paralysis, a society the capital of which he described as "the sow that eats her pigs". The historical paralysis as an eternal scar on the Irish mentality and the religious paralysis as being mentally chained by the stifling impact of the Catholic Church is even strengthened by the personal poverty and the manifold tragedies that afflicted the McCourts. In the center of this account stands Frankie, and we come to experience the scorning contemporary society which offers nothing but apathy towards its citizens' needs through his eyes as he grows up amidst bleak and dirty surroundings. It is an account moving in its simplicity and agonizing in its apodictic truth. The moments of joy and happiness in Frankie's life, rare as they are, allow temporary escapes from a society and a culture caught in its despair and paralysis. The movie tells the story of an Irish boy growing up and trying to find hope and love amidst despair and abject poverty. It is a valuable account that needs to be applauded for its authenticity and brutal candor. Highly recommended.

Angels in the Outfield (1995)

Yeah, the archetype of a simple but inspirational movie. The very end when the entire crowd in the stadium gets up and the people raise their hands gives me a chill whenever I see it. That's just brilliant. Joseph is wonderful as the lonely and sad kid who has so far been disappointed by anyone and anything in his life. The way he interacts with Danny Glover and tries to make him believe in the magic and the angels is funny and exhilarant. A very nice family movie with - I concede - a rather corny happy end. But hey, it doesn't really matter, the movie retains its basic quality by the good acting and the inspirational themes.

Anna and the King (1999)

Yeah, a nice love story. I normally don't like the majority of tacky movies produced in this genre, but this one was okay. It had sincere acting and an unusual and thus interesting background.

Apollo 13 (1995)

Folks, the first ever movie I saw in the cinema back in 1995, when my movie-going career started. Solid movie with an incredible cast.

Apt Pupil (1998)

Wow, what a dark movie! The setting and the atmosphere is wonderfully staged. The interaction between Brad Renfro and Ian McKellen is perfidious, the way they control and manipulate each other is shrewd. It's not so much the visual horror, but the psychological terror that infiltrates their minds. The clinical calculating and the subtle viciousness of both main characters make this movie sinister. Thus the acting to attain this effect has to be very good, what it is indeed. Well thought-through, nice cast, straight acting.

Arachnophobia (1990)

Tough to watch for those who have a spider phobia (as the title already suggests). It was definitely interesting, also with the right amount of suspense and creepy scenes. Jeff Daniels and John Goodman deliver solid performanes. A nice movie indeed.

Arlington Road (1999)

Well-cast thriller that keeps you at the edge of your seat. The boys have little screen time, but Spencer once again aces his part. The ending is unsettling and depressing.

August Rush (2007)

I agree with the previous comments. Freddie did a very good job, but the ending in particular was so very unrealistic and melodramatic I had to smile :)

The story is very nice and inspirational nonetheless.

Barnens ö (1980)

I can't make a lot of it. Movies that don't follow a clear path storywise and just depict random encounters in a random socio-cultural environment are simply not to my liking. It's the same with My Life as a Dog, which I don't plan to watch again too.
