Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (2011)

One of the best boy performances I have seen in a long time, embedded in a brilliant story.

Father and Scout (1994)

Brian Bonsall is a smart actor, I agree. I have seen this one a few years ago. I remember it having been a more or less average movie. The story was basically good, but the actual transformation on screen was fairly simple and didn't match the quality I look for in father-son stories, which belong to my favorites in general. Brian was still decent; he made me watch through the whole movie. I wonder if they could have made a better movie if they'd cast a different guy as his dad...

Father Hood (1993)

The movie is a bit surreal, but the story itself has potential. Patrick Swayze is as cool as ever. To be watched out for if you're a fan of Brian Bonsall. Definitely not a must watch, but there are some nicely shot scenes between the kids and their dad.

Fear of the Dark (2002)

I watched this one three times already. I think both boys do an amazing job. Jesse James is so good as the scared younger brother, and Kevin Zegers aces his role as the sceptical yet thoughful older brother. It's the psychological terror that invades into their minds, not so much the actual visual transformation. That leaves a lot to the viewer's personal imagination and makes the story quite scary, especially if you allow the eerie plot to affect you.

Finding Neverland (2004)

Heart-breaking movie. Magical, inspirational, sheer brilliance. It's especially Freddie Highmore who acts so stunningly. All the boys are brilliant. This is a movie that moves anyone I guess, it has natural charm and delivers the true story of J.M. Barrie, his life and times in such a wonderful manner. I as being a writer myself could easily identify with Johnny Depp and his yearning for inspiration which he eventually found in the magic of pre-teen imagination and adventure. Again, inspirational! For the young and those young at heart. Long live the Lost Boys!

First Kid (1996)

Okay, okay. The movie doesn't aim at high quality. It's not meant to be. It is meant to be funny and entertaining. It is shallow and sometimes oversubscribed. However, I thought that a) Brock Pierce did a wonderful job, b) I could deduce some messages of life, c) the plot was nice and d) the interaction between Sinbad and Brock was rather substantial and well staged. Brock Pierce showed how lonesome and frustrating the life as the "First Kid" can be, how isolated he is and how much he suffers from this isolation. Sinbad - I mean, he is a clumsy guy, but he did fine in here. I never thought that he was constrained or fake. The movie as a whole lacks a realistic storyline, but that didn't matter to me. I was rather attracted by the scene in which Brock told him amid tears how outcast he felt, and I thought it was witty how Sinbad showed him what do do about it. Definitely not a masterpiece but surely above the average.

Flight of the Navigator (1986)

One of my early childhood classics. Joey Kramer is doing a great job. I mean, hey, he is brilliant. The story too (time travel!) is well-thought-through and demanding. For young kids. Give it a try.

Well, Elijah is grown up. This movie is basically okay, a nice story, but nothing that makes it special.

Forever Young (1992)

Great movie for children and those who stay young at heart. Mel Gibson and Elijah Wood interact splendidly. Elijah is doing an awesome job once again. The story is interesting and the cast aces the emotional implications. The ending is heart-warming. Thanks Mel and Elijah for a another great experience!

Mediocre. Occasionally corny and oversubscribed. Smart kids and witty events, but shallow as a whole.

Frailty (2001)

Excellent movie. That's exactly one of those thrillers I enjoy watching after dusk. The cast is outstanding - Powers Boothe and Matthew McConaughey interact in a coordinated and perfidious manner (they're both Texas boys - so no wonder). I needn't say how good Bill Paxton is in here, as he aced almost any part in any movie he did so far. Now, Jeremy Sumpter and especially Matt O'Leary, they make this movie remarkably good. It's Matt's performance that adds tremendous authenticity and emotional depth to the plot. He plays in a way that demands considerable talent and skills - and both he has. Here he shows how mature he is and in which experienced manner he is able to handle such difficult roles such as the one of Fenton. I like him very much, he is incredibly strong in both his demeanour and his psychological endurance. Bravo! Jeremy Sumpter, as being Matt's junior partner here, aces his part as well. Especially in the last few shots, he exposes his tremendous talent and his genuine skills. Well done boys! Trivia: The two boys on the scooters when the movie eclipses are actually Matt and Jeremy again.

Free Willy 3: The Rescue (1997)

Okay, better than part two again. The whole Free Willy series struggles with the way the very good first movie is continued. This one here had some good parts (like the young boy trying to persuade his father not to kill Willy), slightly above the average.

Frequency (2000)

I truly love those father-son stories that deal with profound emotional implications and don't let go of me. Here, Dennis Quaid and James Caviezel and their interaction through time via the ham radio is unique. The story is emotionally enthralling as hardly any other, especially as John ultimately changes the past. The sequence showing how Frank survives and how John's memory changes at the same time (!) is awesome! The viewer has to stay alert and stick to the pace of the storyline. The reference to baseball is a nice one too. The kids in here, just as Michael Cera and Daniel Henson are perfectly cast and very genuine. Despite the emphasis on the excellent time-travel story mingled with suspense and a thrilling crime story, it's the father-son aspect that broke my heart. Just think about the sequence of Frank and young Johnny on the bike. Also the very end, in combination with the song, makes me smile and sob at the same time. Great acting, great characters, great underlying themes, great time-travel aspect! Highly recommended!!
