Kes (1969)

One of Ken Loach's first films, and his best -- Cathy Come Home and Sorry We Missed You are also excellent, but Land and Freedom, for instance, is not a patch on Juan Antonio Bardem's Seven Days in January: in fact, it could aptly have been titled Homage to Catalonia: The Soap. Kes is part of the 'kitchen sink realism' movement in British film that produced such fine movies as A Taste of Honey, A Kind of Loving, This Sporting Life, The Leather Boys, Billy Liar and The L-Shaped Room, but is also something special by itself.

Khakestar-o-khak (2004)

Pretty good. Wajma is an even better Afghan film. Atiq Rahimi has gone on to make Our Lady of the Nile, an adaption of Scholastique Mukasonga's novel of the same name that uses a girls' boarding school as a microcosm in which to foretell the events of the Rwandan genocide; it's interesting and worthwhile, though Kinyarwanda is rather better.

Khaled (2001)

Strong neorealist-inspired character study. Does a lot on a low budget. Could make an interesting dual watch with The Year Dolly Parton Was My Mom.

Khamsa (2008)

A very good social-realist film a bit like a present-day version of The 400 Blows. Eleven-year-old Marco, however, is not nearly as sympathetic a character as Antoine Doinel: as well as tenderly loving to his ailing grandmother, he's horribly cruel to animals. Before shooting the film, director Karim Dridi spent a year living in a Romani camp in L'Estaque and coaching his non-professional young actors. He has gone on to make Chouf, a similarly tough-minded film about small-time drug cartels that draws more on crime-thriller conventions but retains a higher than usual level of authenticity by also using mainly non-professional local actors.

Khane-ye doust kodjast? (1987)

By the late great Abbas Kiarostami, who made quite a few other excellent fictional films featuring boy actors, including The Experience, A Wedding Suit, The Breaktime and The Bread and Alley, as well as the superb documentary Homework.
