A.J. Wentworth, B.A. (1982)

Nice low-key little series, though not as funny as the books it's based on.

Abel (2010)

Original small satire with heart, smarts and excellent acting from Christopher Ruiz-Esparza. Also see the 2017 Polish film Silent Night.

Abner, the Invisible Dog (2013)

Has its enjoyable moments, though Daniel Zykov is not exactly a great acting talent.

Abouna (2002)

Intelligent, funny in spots though also sad, and beautifully shot, with a nice bit of self-reference in the roll-of-film subplot. The way the scenes are cut together reminds me of Maurice Pialat. Boy actor fans will notice the poster for Chaplin's The Kid in the cinema! The brothers' closeness is lovely to watch. The director is Mahamat Saleh Haroun, who directed and starred in Chad's first-ever feature film, Bye Bye Africa, in 1999, and later gave us the excellent A Screaming Man, Grigris and Sex, Okra and Salted Butter. The only other major Chadian director is Issa Serge Coelo, who has made Daresalam and DP75: Tartina City, both very good.

About a Boy (2002)

One of the various Hugh Grant vehicles; he was good in the fine Merchant Ivory film of Forster's Maurice, but then got into doing his bumbling schtick for Richard Curtis. This one, however, is an interesting departure though it does pale in comparison to really good odd-couple buddy movies such as Alice in the Cities, Young Soul Rebels and Blindspotting. Nicholas Hoult is an excellent young actor and the friendship between his character and Grant's is the central relationship of the film and nicely portrayed; the two actors work really well together and the time-lapse sequence showing their growing friendship is great. Didn't care for the 'gotta conform to have friends' side of the message, though.

Abuse (1982)

Based on a true story from the director's own life. Like Der Kreis, Nighthawks and A Very Natural Thing, it's a snapshot of homosexual life at a particular point in the twentieth century, and like Un chant d'amour and We Were One Man, it's a very original gay-themed film, a one-off.

Adama Meshuga'at (2006)

Delicate, detailed, powerful, beautifully shot, excellently acted semi-autobiographical film. Could make an interesting dual watch with Boy Takes Girl.

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994)

It's a cult classic but I didn't care for it. For something in this line, but much better and genuinely hilarious, see the 1978 film La cage aux folles.
