Big Meg Little Meg (2000-2001)

Solid and fun. Premise like that of Freaky Friday. Performances less beguiling than Jodie Foster's as a 70s tomboy, but Matthew Beard is nice to watch.

Story owes something to Tintin in Tibet.

Billy Elliot (2000)

A movie that hits all the right notes, very deliberately. It sets out to be a crowd-pleaser and it succeeds. Jamie Bell -- who has gone on to a solid adult acting career, appearing in, among others, Nicholas Nickleby, Jane Eyre, The Adventures of Tintin and the Rosemary Sutcliff adaptation The Eagle -- acts his socks off and dances with energy, though it's very clear he's had no actual ballet training. His character is eleven, but he was thirteen and a half when filming began and it shows; on the other hand, Stuart Wells looks and sounds much younger than the seventeen he was during filming. He joined the army after making this!

Billy Elliot the Musical (2014)

A wonderful musical even for those who don't usually like musicals. Elliott Hanna makes a good Billy. Liam Mower was the greatest, no question, so it's quite special to see him return here as the adult Billy. The dancing of Billys such as Liam Redhead, Alex Ko, Mitchell Tobin and Oliver Taylor outshines Elliott's, but Elliott's acting is better.
