The Railway Children (1970)

Quite good adaptation of the book. Falls short of being a masterpiece perhaps, but much loved.

Ramchand Pakistani (2008)

Good-looking and worthwhile, albeit slightly sanitised and with some accent slippage.

Rang-e khoda (1999)

Full of simple beauty and warmth but a touch sentimental. It's deservedly popular, but there's a bit of a tendency for non-Iranian audiences to focus on it too much, while overlooking better Iranian films such as Leila, Secret Ballot, Under the Skin of the City, The Day I Became a Woman, The Circle and A Separation.

Rasputin (1996)

Fairly thickly fictionalised HBO treatment with some richly beautiful depictions of Russian Orthodox cathedral services and palace interiors. They must have had a great art department. Alexei Romanov is one of those royals who exercise considerable fascination, like the Empress Elisabeth of Austria, who was the subject of three romanticised 'Sissi films' in the 1950s. Here Alexei narrates, and it's an intelligent narration by Freddie Findlay; a pity then that Findlay doesn't have more to do, as the meat of the screenplay goes to the adult actors, with the Tsarevitch little more than a plot device.

Ratcatcher (1999)

Beautiful, grim, poetic. Reminiscent of the autobiographical films of Terence Davies and Bill Douglas.

Reach for Glory (1962)

Remarkable and overlooked. Won a United Nations award. On one level, it's simply the touching story of two thirteen-year-old boys who fall in love with each other. It also deals with questions of religious tolerance, class, cultural differences, patriotism and sissyhood, but unlike, say, Tea and Sympathy or Another Country, doesn't hit us over the head with them. Props for using a real native German speaker rather than a native English speaker with a fake accent. Martin Tomlinson and Oliver Grimm give fine performances as the two leads.

By Iranian director Sohrab Shahid-Saless, who also directed the wonderful Still Life (1974). Could make a good dual watch with Mamma Roma.
