Genre: Comedy, Drama

IMDb

Synopsis

7 year old Ludovic is happy, healthy, and good-natured, but there's a bit of a problem he has decided that he's a girl. While his parents Hanna and Pierre try to understand, Ludovic stubbornly refuses to listen to reason. His fondness for wearing girl's clothes and frequent pronouncements to strangers that he's going to be a woman when he grows up become increasingly worrying, and things come to a head when Ludovic declares that when he's older, he plans to marry Jerome, the boy next door.

A wonderful movie. It's not meant to be totally realistic: it was conceived as a modern fairy tale. For a punchier, funnier short-form take on similar subject matter, see Hazel; for a more realistic take, see Pelo Malo or Barbie Boy, or Gun Hill Road, or C.R.A.Z.Y., or the documentary short Pink Boy, or, for a gender-flipped version, the marvellous Tomboy...but don't forget that way back in 1997, this earnest, broad-brush, heart-on-its-sleeve film was out there paving the way for those more nuanced and wide-ranging depictions of gender-variant kids.

I thought the movie was well done, but I didn't like the parent's reactions and ideas about what to do.
