Synopsis

Maria, a vivacious mother of two children, doesn't have a husband, but enjoys the attentions of many young men. An old friend, Nikolai, is in love with her, but cannot divorce his wife and marry her because of his sense of responsibility to his sick daughter. When Maria dies unexpectedly, the children resist having to leave their flat to live with a relation. Instead, they are looked after by Anna, a lonely librarian who lives next door. Meanwhile, Nikolai has left his wife after his daughter was permanently hospitalized, only to find that he is too late for Maria. Nevertheless, he decides to stay with Anna to help raise Maria's kids.
