Synopsis
In Turin in the mid-nineteenth century, boys from the poorer parts of the city, many of them homeless, are regarded by the authorities as merely a nuisance, who will almost certainly end up as criminals - and even the anti-Establishment factions see them only in terms of potential recruits to their revolutionary cause. In contrast, Giovanni Bosco, a humble priest, has a different philosophy with regard to these boys: "They must be loved; and they must know that there's somebody who loves them." With only this belief - and a great deal of faith - he starts a home for the abandoned boys of the city, and founds a new religious order, the Salesians (named after St. Francis de Sales), in order to spread his work. But his activities arouse the deadly enmity of both the Establishment and the anti-clericalist opposition.
Notes
- Based on the life of Roman Catholic priest Saint Giovanni Bosco (1815-1888, canonised 1934), whose name is sometimes anglicised in English-speaking countries to John Bosco, and who was more popularly known as Don Bosco - 'Don' being an Italian honorific title accorded a highly respected male figure.
