Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
(2003)

Country: USA

Genre: War Drama

IMDb

Synopsis

During the Napoleonic Wars, a brash British captain pushes his ship and crew to their limits in pursuit of a formidable French war vessel around South America.

Notes

  • Based on several of the novels in the Aubrey-Maturin series of novels by Patrick O'Brian, notably "Master and Commander" (1969), "HMS Surprise" (1973), "The Fortune of War" (1979), "The Letter of Marque" (1988), and particularly "The Far Side of the World" (1984). The series focused on two main characters, naval officer Jack Aubrey (Russell Crowe in the film) and physician and naturalist Stephen Maturin (Paul Bettany in the film - in the novels Maturin is also a spy, but the film omits this entirely).
  • It is fair to say that this film was positively showered with awards, which included: the David Lean Award for Direction at the BAFTA Awards (2004), the award for Best Cinematography at the 76th Academy Awards (2004), the Movie of the Year award at the AFI Awards USA (2004), the Film of the Year award at the London Critics Circle Film Awards (2004), and numerous others.
  • For his role in this film, Max Pirkis won the award for Best Young Actor in an International Film at the Young Artist Awards (2004), as well as the award for Most Promising Newcomer at the Evening Standard British Film Awards (2004).
