Synopsis

A contemporary fable about 13 year-old Arbor and his best friend Swifty. Excluded from school and outsiders in their own neighborhood, the two boys begin collecting scrap metal for Kitten, a local dealer, using a horse and cart. Swifty has a natural gift with horses while Arbor emulates Kitten ? keen to impress him and make some money. However, Kitten favors Swifty, leaving Arbor feeling hurt and excluded, driving a wedge between the boys. Arbor becomes increasingly greedy and exploitative, becoming more like Kitten. Tensions build, leading to a tragic event, which transforms them all.

Gritty and real with a superb performance by Connor Chapman as Arbor. At times a difficult film with the characters presented as rude and unpleasant but it makes one understand the plight of children in impoverished families in the UK where violence is probably the basis for everyday life.

A raw and grim movie indeed. It seemed every other line of dialogue contained the F word, there was hardly a moment when kids or adults weren't screaming at each other or coming to blows. I think the grimness was ladled on with a trowel. I think the director, Clio Barnard, inserted shots of horses and sheep in fields so that the audience could have a rest from all the expletives and shouting that was going on. However, Connor Chapman was really good for a boy actor's first film. It was a relief, towards the end, that Swifty's mother showed forgiveness and understanding to the distraught Arbor.
