Synopsis

Manuel is a 12-year-old Portuguese boy who, after a failure in school, runs away from home so as not to face his father's anger. Soon confronted with the hardships of his new life, he is taken in by the neighborhood cobbler, Juan Alvarez, a refugee from the Spanish civil war who teaches him how to read and to assert his rights. Back in school, the boy unites his classmates in a protest against school uniforms. A painful confrontation follows between the principal, the young dissidents, their leader Manuel and his mentor Alvarez. It is then that Alvarez's ideals come up against harsh reality.
