Synopsis
Based on the Mark Twain tales of Tom Sawyer. Tom lives with his Aunt Polly in the 1850s Missouri, getting into trouble and avoiding work whenever possible. Tom and his pal Huck skip town for an adventure on an island in the middle of the Mississippi returning to find that the town believes they're dead. In this version Jim is a boy instead of a man. Also includes the whitewash episode, the graveyard murder, and the cave adventure.

7 / 10 Tom Sawyer is hard to adapt for the screen because Twain's humorous running commentary is half the point of the book, but this film is very enjoyable and surely the best screen version ever made.
My Movie Rating: 9 / 10 This is a typical 1930s film with its great opening showing Tommy Kelly swinging across the river and the pleasant music accompanying the titles. Kelly is excellent as wily Tom ably supported by David Holt as his crafty half brother, Sidney, and Jackie Moran as Huck. As nostalgic as they come, colourful and ably directed by Norman Trurog. A must for every collector of the Boy Film.

Still probably the best cinema version of Twain's novel ever made, though I wish Mickey Rentschler was Tom, rather than Tommy Kelly. Jackie Moran is excellent, and David Holt's Sid is gorgeous!
