IMDb

Synopsis

This movie is based on actual events, but it says it is not all about one specific incident. It documents St. Vincent's Orphanage in Canada, where many of the boys suffer physical, emotional, and sexual abuse at the hands of the brothers who run the facility. When the stories are surfaced and a police investigation is begun, religious and political groups work to silence the story to keep it from reaching the public. A very well-made film and some beautiful boys whose plight is heartbreaking. Should really be seen together with part two, The Boys of St Vincent: 15 Years Later. The films are loosely based on real events. How loosely? It's not clear, and I'm not sure I like the portrayal of Lavin as totally "sick and evil" or the extreme nature of the abuse depicted. Such things have certainly been known to happen but how far is what we're shown really representative of the Roman Catholic Church's abuse scandals? Aaron Rookus's two short films Wednesdays and Balance are the same kind of diptych as these two: the abuse, then its aftermath. But they're considerably better, because they don't over-egg the pudding. The more recent Polish film In the Name of... also deals much better with a somewhat similar subject, while Fox and His Friends and F. est un salaud are much better films on the broader theme of exploitative relationships. There's also Allison Anders's good semi-autobiographical film Things Behind the Sun.

I thought Johnny was convincing as an abuse victim. the story is about a lot of the boys at the orphanage, but mostly the Kevin Reevey character, it's in more detail the physical and sexual abuse he suffered, and some scenes are quite convincing. There are some scenes of scripted nudity, and one scene of accidental nudity. of course all of the scenes of sexual abuse were dramatized, but some were quite shocking, I'm sure for the dramatic effect. I was in my early 40's when I saw this movie the 1st time, and when Kevin gets beaten by the head brother, I started weeping for him, it's that powerful of a movie! I'm sure, the only type of person that would not be shocked by this movie, would be someone who has absolutely no conscience!
