Dividing Bar

An absolutely wonderful film about a plucky boy (Prdelka, played by Martin Mikulás) whose parents are taken away to a concentration camp by the Germans during World War II. (They turn out to be Jewish in race. They are clearly not Jews in religion, though, since, besides the fact that they don't practice any Jewish religious ritual, one scene shows that Prdelka is uncircumcised.) The boy ends up living with a fisherman who protects him. This brief synopsis may make the film sound depressing, and some scenes, of course, are; but there is also a great deal of hopefulness in this film, symbolised by the 'golden eels' that Prdelka is told about and hopes to catch; and this quality is enhanced by the brilliant cinematography. The countryside is incredibly beautiful in this film, the boy seems to fit naturally into this setting, and the whole movie is filled with a bright luminosity. A masterpiece.
