The First Hollywood Sound Version of "Oliver Twist". An orphan boy in 1830's London is abused in a workhouse, then falls into the clutches of a gang of thieves. This version depicts Fagin in a much more evil light than later versions. While this film is not especially well-remembered today, and has been eclipsed by practically all of the later film versions of the Charles Dickens' novel, it did begin a Hollywood "fad" for Dickens which lasted for several years.

A catastrophically poor adaptation of Dickens' great novel. Besides the poor script and wooden 'acting', William Cowen's direction is astonishingly lackadaisical, making it difficult to watch the film in one sitting without falling asleep. Dickie Moore is miscast as an über-'cute' Oliver, with an obtrusive Yank accent. Altogether, like having to sit through a particularly ineptly performed school play. Of historical interest only.My Movie Rating: 1 / 10
5/10 for Dickie Moore!My Movie Rating: 5 / 10
Nice chubby Oliver Twist. Yes, that's what Dickens was looking for. And why follow the story at all? Just take a bit here and there and make a film.
This might be the most horribly UNadapted story ever brought to the big screen. My Movie Rating: 1 / 10
Very, very dated in style. Probably only of interest to vintage movie buffs. The acting is not very good and Dickie Moore was unfortunately rather miscast. The editing is quite horrible and the staging and camera work often appear to be amateurish even by standards at the time.My Movie Rating: 5 / 10
